Websites, mailing lists & infrastructure · Sydney
I’m Joseph Derrick. I build and design websites and the infrastructure behind them: sites that run on your own accounts, mailing lists you actually own, and the weekly jobs you’d rather not do by hand. For bands, artists, small businesses, community groups and larger organisations. No project is too big or too small.
31 live projects, 10 of them for clients.
How I can help
Pick the one that sounds most like you.
Most sites don’t need any of them. Move it, keep editing it, stop paying for it.
I can usually get it all back, and put it somewhere it can’t lapse again.
Your list, your sending account, about a tenth of the price.
If you can explain it, I can probably make something to make it easier, or even automate it.
Stories
What was wrong, what I did, and how it turned out.

A band I love, a mock-up made on spec, and a site that now costs them roughly the price of the domain.

Nine years of Sydney's experimental music gigs, moved off Squarespace without breaking a single old link.

The subscription lapsed. The site was rebuilt from an archived copy, and now looks after itself.

An accessible music program for people with disability, rebuilt so it's accessible to edit too.

A drummer and installation artist who now updates his own site.

Twenty-four students, two campuses, a fifteen-minute walk between them, and a school calendar that never sits still.

Every week a food co-op turns a spreadsheet of orders into four sheets of paper that tell volunteers what goes in which box.

I built a machine to listen to a breakfast radio show so you didn't have to. It was seven weeks old when the show ended.
My own products
Small tools, well kept.
I make Currawong as well: kind, careful software for any business or organisation. Each app does a single job and looks after it properly, and they all share one sign-in. Two of the stories above run their mailing lists on it.
currawong.dev →Newsletters that look lovely in every inbox, a signup form that confirms by email, and a list that stays yours. Sent through your own account, at its price.
Email on your organisation’s own domain. Everyone gets their own mailbox, in the mail apps they already use.
One account and one passkey for every Currawong app. No password, ever.
A password vault only you can open, locked on your device before anything is sent. The official Bitwarden apps work with it.
Numbers, extensions, ring groups and voicemail. Calls run on separate phone servers, so they keep ringing even when the dashboard is down.
Everything
Sites, apps and tools, large and small. New things on jderrick.app appear here on their own.

A website, a redesign, hosting that keeps falling over, a mailing list, something you’d rather stop doing by hand. Tell me what you’re trying to do and what’s in the way, and I’ll tell you honestly whether I can help.
Only your name, email and a message are needed. The rest just means a better first reply.
I also run a woodwind & brass repair workshop, so I know the small-business side of the table too. josephderrick.repair ↗
